Environment & Climate Change
Environmental sustainability has re-emerged as a development priority given the new focus on long-term time horizons necessary to address climate change. Many underlying environmental parameters have, for some considerable time, been under threat due to unsustainable natural resource use. This pressure is likely to be amplified by the effects of climate change, underlining the urgent need to address fundamental environmental issues.
In the climate change context, the fourth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report presented the evidence that underpins discussions at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The latest evidence collated by the IPCC presents a number of projections, based on a range of emissions scenarios, indicating a global average temperature rise of between 1.5°C and 4.5°C. The projections on rainfall are less certain, however rainfall variability may be projected to increase in many model runs. The economic effect of decisions on mitigation and adaptations have been completed at the global level (the Stern Review) and a number of regional- and country-scale economic impact studies are now underway.
Harewelle has extensive experience of working in the environment field and is currently managing the DFID Water, Environment and Sanitation Resource Centre (DEW Point), which is also one of the three resource centres that underpins the current DFID Climate Desk.
