Kenya Climate Change Screening

Kenya, East Africa

This programme involved the appraisal of DFID-Kenya’s entire portfolio of operations in the field of climate change and disaster risk mitigation. The broad aim of this work was to identify priorities for mainstreaming risk management practices into future DFID Kenya programmes, as well producing guidance materials and raising awareness of key issues to enable the office to undertake its own internal screening of climate and disaster risk.

A key aspect of this project was the development of Kenya-specific climate models, incorporating temperature and rainfall predictions for both the 2020 and 2080 time horizons. A methodology was developed for use within DFID Kenya to enable climate risk screening of existing and pipeline programmes and the identification of priority actions for incorporating climate and disaster risk management into programmes, to take place.

Guidance on key climate issues, complemented by awareness-raising activities within DFID Kenya in conjunction with selected national stakeholders, was facilitated through consultation and a collaborative workshop. A further output of this work was the generation of climate change scenarios for Kenya and climate risk screening for priority sectors, using the climate models. More widely, this piece of work provided information to help support policy dialogue on mainstreaming climate issues into Government policy. (2007 - 2008)
