Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Support to the Ministry of Education

Kenya, East Africa

Construction of new toiletsThe Kenya Education Sector Support Programme (KESSP) is a comprehensive sector-wide development programme designed by the Ministry of Education. The overarching aim of the KESSP is to improve the infrastructure of primary schools so that more children can enter primary school.

This programme involved the provision of technical assistance to the Schools Infrastructure Management Unit (SIMU) in the Kenyan Department of Education, as part of the DFID-funded KESSP.  Broadly, this project aimed to establish a harmonised environmental health policy and implement effective strategies for school water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, to be done through collaborative efforts with the team members of the SIMU.  Initially this work was conducted over 6 months, however a one year extension to the project has since been granted.Hand washing - Picture taken by Richard Carter

Key aspects of this project included the provision of advice to the Ministry of Education on all aspects of water, sanitation and hygiene promotion programming within the KESSP. An additional key output of this project was the development of a Work Plan, in conjunction with team leaders and senior SIMU staff, which included support for the development of a School Health and Hygiene Policy as well as the identification of appropriate modalities for the delivery of services in schools and the provision of support to the monitoring and evaluation process.
