DEW Point Resource Centre

Worldwide, Worldwide

Harewelle currently leads a consortium providing a technical Resource Centre for Environment, Water and Sanitation (DEW Point) to DFID offices world-wide. The DEW Point Resource Centre is delivered through a consortium of organisations led by Harewelle International and mobilises resources on behalf of DFID staff and their developing partners in the areas of environment, water and sanitation in four thematic groupings – water resource management, water and sanitation, environment and climate change. Services are delivered via two mechanisms:

a) Core Services: A range of tailored information services to facilitate knowledge-sharing between specialists within DFID and externally in the development community. This includes the provision of a Helpdesk and website, a research document database, an organisation database, training database and a regular e-mail bulletin.

b) Commissioned Services: Harewelle is also responsible for the provision of Technical Assistance to DFID through the identification, contracting and management of individuals and teams of specialists who will undertake specific programme assignments, research or training (or other activities) on behalf of DFID and their partners. These services are managed by DEW Point against ToRs drawn up against each assignment. Assistance has been provided to DFID and its development partners across a range of areas including Climate Change Adaptation, Water Resource Management and Water and Sanitation.

Photo taken by Annie Bungeroth, courtesy of Practical Action ConsultingUnder this contract, to date DEW Point has undertaken over 50 Environmental Screening Notices for DFID projects as part of the project design process. These are Environmental Risk Analyses which evaluate the impact that the development intervention will have on the near environment and the effects that environmental and climate change may have on the viability and sustainability of the project. Our approach to the assignment would be to ensure, through our existing extensive networks in this area, that the feasibility and design is driven by the specific countries selected for the pilot, local and regional institutions supported by UK expertise and that this is reflected in the final project design. For the purpose of this assignment, therefore we have assembled a consortium which draws on the skills, experience and networks of leading scientific institutions globally in this field which will be supported as required by strong UK-based expertise and experience in this area. Through DEW Point, Harewelle is taking an active role in aid design, application and policy in the UK and overseas. (2007 - 2010)
