Harewelle returns to Central Asia

Harewelle International is part of a Consortium led by Egis Bceom International,  which have recently been awarded an EC contract to provide ‘Support to Further Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in Turkmenistan’.

This represents a return to Central Asia for Harewelle, which through its subsidiary ULG International, has a strong track record in the region. We are involved in providing support in Kazakhstan as well as on the recently completed Asian Grain Productivity Improvement Project in Uzbekistan.

The project in Turkmenistan is aimed at supporting the Turkmen Authorities and in particular the Ministry of Agriculture in the achievement of the National Sector objectives with regard to sustainable agriculture, rural development and institutional support.

More specifically, the project involves:

  • Assisting the Turkmen key stakeholders with the development of the sector strategy plan with associated budget
  • Increasing the knowledge and experience of farming households and agro-businesses so they can cope with privatised farming and market economy
  • Ensuring that farmers and producers have adequate means and access to resources for investing in and practicing private farming

The programme commenced in February 2010 and will take 24 months. We are currently mid way through the Inception Phase, which should be completed by the end of April. This will identify inputs for a number of short-term opportunities over the course of the programme.
