Bangladesh Tea Smallholders will get support from CFC and FAO
Monjur Hossain of PMTC (Bangladesh) Limited recently visited Indonesia to attend the launching of a three year project funded by the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) called “Capacity Building and Rejuvenation of Tea Smallholdings by Adopting Eco-Friendly Management Practices and Strengthening Marketing Links for Enhanced Income Generation of Poor Farming Communities in Indonesia and Bangladesh.”
The objectives of the project are to adopt eco friendly management practices and alleviate poverty and unemployment to bring about a social improvement in the life style of poor farmers. This will be achieved through:
- strengthening the knowledge-base of tea small-holders for enhanced productivity and quality improvement by producing high quality leaf that is free of extraneous chemical residues
- strengthening marketing links for enhanced income generation of poor farming communities in Indonesia and Bangladesh
This will ensure that low income tea farmers have a better chance of getting more for their crops which will consequently alleviate poverty and unemployment and will hopefully give a huge social improvement to their lifestyles.
The Bangladesh Tea Board and PMTC (Bangladesh) Limited are the collaborating agencies for implementing the project which is split between Bangladesh and Indonesia.
