Harewelle supports health research in Zambia
Harewelle-sponsored PhD student, Amy Barnes, who is currently studying at the University of Sheffield, has recently returned from a successful field visit to Zambia, where she continued her research into the way in which aid for Health is being delivered and managed.
Amy’s research is focused on the comparative advantages of different methods for delivering and managing aid for health. Each year, the developing world receives billions of dollars of health aid, but over the last 10 to 15 years, new aid delivery mechanisms have emerged, such as general budget support and SWAP’s. In addition, new institutional channels, like the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria have developed to target specific health issues.
Amy has just completed a successful field trip to Zambia, where she continued her research by focusing on the Global Fund, the Zambian SWAP and general budget support. As part of the field visit she interviewed key people in Lusaka as well as the Central and Eastern Provinces and attended a number of aid-related meetings. Amy developed close links with the University of Zambia, the Zambian Ministry of Health and DFID UK as well as other stakeholders, providing informal feedback on her analysis.
Amy also spent time at the PMTC Zambia offices, where she was able to informally feed back on the emerging outcomes. She will be returning to Zambia next year to continue her research.
