DEW Point to attend Greenbelt Festival

Douglas Alexander - Photo by Cara FlowersThis coming weekend an estimated 20,000 people will descend on Cheltenham Race course to take part in Europe’s largest Christian arts event, the Greenbelt festival.

The first ever festival took place in 1974 and since then the event has gone from strength to strength. Today the festival plays host to a varied programme of theatre, film, fine art and music of every genre and this year’s eclectic line up will include talks by the Secretary of State for International Development Douglas Alexander on ‘Community and Change,’ and ‘Development in a Downturn.’

In recent years the UK Department for International Development has attended Greenbelt and the event has proved to be a useful platform to highlight what they are doing on behalf of the UK public to combat poverty in developing countries. Last year their efforts were ably supported by several DEW Point staff members.

Simon Mercer, our DEW Point Support Assistant, along with several staff members will be attending the festival to provide support to DFID with their treadle pump display. This interactive stall provides an opportunity for children and adults alike to experience using a treadle pump whilst learning more about water issues in the developing world. If you are planning to attend this year’s festival, please do pay us a visit.  Our treadle pump display will be based next to the DFID tent.

If you would like any further information on the festival or on Harewelle’s participation in it, please email smercer@harewelle.org.
